Tiny Bots Let Engines Self-Repair

Tiny Bots Let Engines Self-Repair
Jul-19-18
Insect-inspired robots could one day be inspecting and repairing future aircraft engines.

Developed by researchers from Rolls-Royce as part of their IntelligentEngine project, the tiny bots would travel the hard-to-reach areas of the engine to detect problems and eventually perform minor repairs without the need to remove the entire engine. The robots include the snake-like Flare, which could repair thermal barrier coatings and transport the smaller, crawly Swarm robots—camera-equipped bots that would stream information back to a human operator.
