Tornado-Proof Panels Create Personal Storm Shelters

Tornado-Proof Panels Create Personal Storm Shelters
Jul-18-15
People who live in tornado-prone areas will soon have an extra layer of protection with the development of tornado-resistant panels that can be retrofitted onto existing homes.

Created by a team from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the panels are made up of a combination of thermoplastic and fiberglass resins and fibers, which makes them stronger than the steel used in many storm shelters. The panels also weigh up to 80 percent less that storm shelter steel, and can be used to cover the walls and ceiling of a room or closet—creating a personal storm shelter that takes up very little extra space.

The panels have been approved by the National Storm Shelter Association to withstand an EF5 tornado.
