Tracking Firefighters With a Bread Crumb Trail of Routers

Tracking Firefighters With a Bread Crumb Trail of Routers

A new tracking system could help firefighting crews continuously monitor every member of their team without interference from walls and other obstacles.

The system consists of three parts, a tracking system GLANSER that is worn by each firefighter, and a health assessment system (PHASER) to monitor their vitals in real time. The third part is the router system, called WISPER. The WISPER unit consists of five WISPER routers contained in a canister, one of which would be automatically dropped if a firefighter goes out of GLASNER contact. The routers would be dropped periodically as long as the contact is severed in order to form a network to relay the GLASNER and PHASER information to the laptop in the firetruck.

GLASNER and PHASER are already in use, and Homeland Security is now looking for a company to manufacture the WISPER routers.
