Tracking Sleep Disorders With Smartphones

Tracking Sleep Disorders With Smartphones
Dec-14-14
A new method of monitoring for sleep disorders via a standard smartphone could help reduce trips to sleeping labs—and make it more likely the disorder will be detected sooner.

The potential method was confirmed by teams from Steven's Institute of Technology and Florida State University after a study that included using an iPhone to record the sound of breathing while sleeping. When equipped with a pair of microphone-equipped earbuds placed on a bedside table, the smartphone was able to monitor the users' breathing to within a half-breath per minute of what can be recorded by conventional (and bulkier) equipment.

The team now plans to develop an app related to the study, which could make it much easier to monitor sleep quality without resorting to uncomfortable or expensive gadgets.
