Tumor Patch Fights Cancer Three Ways

Tumor Patch Fights Cancer Three Ways
Jul-26-16
An implantable patch able to treat tumors in three different ways could offer a powerful new method of fighting cancer.

The hydrogel patch, developed by a team from MIT, was created primarily for treating colorectal cancer—one of the most common forms of cancer. The patch is embedded with gold nanorods infused with a chemotherapy agent. When the rod are exposed to infrared light, they will heat up and destroy the tumor. That same heat will cause the chemotherapy drug to release at the tumor site. As a third line of attack, gold nanospheres in the gel deliver RNA to the site to silence the oncogene that triggers healthy cells to become tumor cells.

The team believes the patch could be applied to the site of a removed tumor, to prevent recurrence, as well as help destroy tumors without surgery.
