Ultra-Thin Lens-Free Camera

Ultra-Thin Lens-Free Camera
Jun-26-17
An ultra-thin camera from the team at Caltech captures images without a lens.

The technology, which could help usher in truly flat cameras and smartphones, relies on a thin, flat optical phased array (OPA). While traditional lenses are curved to bend the incoming light and focus it on the sensor, the OPA collects light with an array of light receivers. The receivers individually add a time delay (phase shift) to the light they receive, allowing the camera to selectively change its focus and look in different directions.
