A new process that uses citrus peels to clean heavy metals from wastewater could also help keep the peels from landfills.
The process, developed in part by a team from the University of Granada, involves first drying the peels and then treating them with a chemical that causes the peels’ surface area and porosity to increase. The resulting material was granulated and packed in columns, where it acted as a filter to adsorb the heavy metal from tainted water.
Although the material has only been tested in the lab, the team believes the treated citrus peels could offer an alternative to activated charcoal.
