Vibrating Helmet Guides Firefighters

Vibrating Helmet Guides Firefighters
Apr-01-13
Firefighters can become easily disoriented in smoke-filled rooms, but a new vibrating helmet may be able to help them navigate nearby obstacles.

A team at the Sheffield Centre for Robotics (SCentRo) created the helmet by adding an array of ultrasound sensors and vibrational pads to a standard Rosenbauer firefighting helmet. As ultrasound pulses are sent out from the helmet, the onboard sensors analyze the echoes to determine the location and proximity of objects. The information is then relayed to the firefighter as a vibration from the pads facing in the direction of the object.

The team believes a lightweight version of the helmet could be useful for the visually impaired as well, and they are looking for a company willing to partner with them to commercialize the technology.
