Voltaglue Hardens When Charged

Voltaglue Hardens When Charged
Aug-27-15
The electrically charged Voltaglue hardens when a charge is applied to it, making it ideal for use underwater and inside the body.

Created by a team from Nanyang Technological University, the Voltaglue adhesive is made up of hydrogels consisting of carbenes that have been attached to tree-shaped plastics known as dendrimers. Sending an electrical charge through the adhesive triggers the carbenes to hook onto the surface. The number of hooks is dictated by the number of carbenes and how long the charge is applied, which allows the user to customize the glue for specific applications. As an added benefit, the Voltaglue’s adhesive properties can also be reversed, making it easier to disassemble and recycle objects that have reached the end of their life.
