Water Channels Keep Windows Cool

Water Channels Keep Windows Cool

A water-circulation system designed to help keep windows cool could also increase the efficiency of solar cells.

The system consists of a thin, transparent sheet of silicon rubber that has been created with a tiny, waffle pattern of channels embedded within. When the sheet was placed over a square of glass and the channels pumped with water, the 100 degree temperature of the glass was reduced by 12 to 14 degrees. Although pumping the water requires some energy use, the amount is negligible compared to that required by an air conditioner.

Additionally, the system could be applied to solar cells to help keep them cool—increasing their efficiency without the need for bulky, cooling equipment.
