Wearable Sensor Evaluates Fall Risk

Wearable Sensor Evaluates Fall Risk
Nov-16-18
A wrist-worn sensor able to determine fall-risk-assessment could help prevent dangerous falls before they happen.

Falling is a serious risk for many elderly people, with its risk usually assessed at a hospital lab or through the person’s own ‘fall diaries.’ To offer a more preventative and real-world tool, the team from KIT developed a wrist-worn device equipped with motion sensors and GPS able to evaluate the wearer’s fall risk based on their steps, stability while standing, and arm/leg coordination, as well as their environment. A specialized algorithm on a companion app analyzes the data to determine the fall risk and use the information to implement early preventative measures.
