Wireless Sensors Detect Explosives in Real-Time

Wireless Sensors Detect Explosives in Real-Time
Feb-26-15
GE has developed wireless, battery-free RFID sensor tags able to identify explosives in real-time, which could help boost security at ports and other shipping hubs.

Created with the goal of thwarting terrorist attacks, the penny-sized sensors are made up of a flexible substrate containing a material that will change its electrical properties when an explosive or oxidizer is nearby. If such a chemical is detected, the RFID tag will send an alert to a nearby detector. The RFID sensors are inexpensive to produce and can be placed just about anywhere, potentially replacing the bulky equipment in use today.
