Wood Filter Purifies Drinking Water without Electricity

Wood Filter Purifies Drinking Water without Electricity
Mar-22-17
An innovative wood filter able to purify water without the need for electricity could have important applications in refugee camps and during emergency situations.

Developed by a team from KTH Royal Institute of Technology, the filter is made up of wood cellulose fibers that have been submerged in a positively-charged polymer solution. As raw water is gravity-fed through the filter, the negatively charged viruses and bacteria will become trapped within, and the filter can be burned for disposal after use.

Could cactuses or other plants be used to produce purified drinking water on aqueous areas? Many plants and their liquids are rich in vitamins and minerals, only sugars should be refined onto lower levels.
