Woodpecker-Inspired Helmet Protects Against Concussions

Woodpecker-Inspired Helmet Protects Against Concussions
Aug-28-16
A teenage inventor has created an innovative new helmet system to help prevent concussions in football players.

Developed by Berto Garcia, the helmet offers more active protection than other such systems, and was inspired by the natural stabilizers in the heads of animals like woodpeckers and rams. The helmet system is made up of a pair of shoulder pads equipped with stabilizer arms, and a detachable helmet. When the system’s integrated sensors detect a substantial impact, the stabilizer arms will activate to hold the player’s head steady, eliminating the whiplash effect that leads to many concussions.
