XPS System Can Keep Donor Lungs Alive

XPS System Can Keep Donor Lungs Alive
Aug-17-14
With the FDS approval of the XPS system from XVIVO Perfusion, many more donated lungs may have the chance to be deemed viable for transplantation.

Donor lungs must be verified as viable before they can be harvested for transplant, and that process can take so much time that many useful lungs are discarded before they can be evaluated—a limitation the XPS system was created to relieve.

The XPS system can preserve donor lungs for up to four hours, giving the transplant team more time to evaluate the lung's health. The XPS machine holds the donor lungs at the correct temperature while they are continuously flushed with a sterile fluid called STEEN Solution, which preserves the lungs and washes away waste. The XPS will also ventilate the lungs, oxygenating the cells and allowing the medical team to examine the lung's air passages.
