The Story:

Design Contests Spark Creativity Taking a cue from other Fortune 500 companies, Kruger Products ran a design contest, the "Scotties Design Challenge", that asked consumers to create a new look for their popular tissue box.

The idea was to position the tissue box as part of the home décor, with designs that could fit in any room, and blend into the room setting.

As well as getting their design published, winners would receive a $10,000 "Ultimate Room Reno" to inspire their creativity.

Based on the theme, "Inspiration is Everywhere," the 2008 contest was won by five year old Lily Campbell of Charlettetown, PEI with her impressionistic painting of fruit. Her wining entry was based on votes received, uniqueness and how the design fit in with the Scotties family of products.

The contest was so popular two years ago, receiving 23,000 entries, that the company has decided to run the contest again.

The current contest offers a $10,000 CAD grand prize, as well as secondary prizes of an Apple iPad.

This type of open innovation contest is proving to be profitable as well as popular. Consumers love being able to compete for a chance to have their design realized, and the company benefits from media exposure and increased customer excitement about their products.
