Circumferential Pulmonary Vein Ablation using a Laser and Fiberoptic Balloon Catheter

The purpose of this invention is to deliver near-infrared laser radiation radially from a diffusing optical fiber through an optically transparent distendable balloon to create complete circumferential thermal lesions at the pulmonary vein ostia or orifice. Electrical isolation of the pulmonary veins from the left atrium of the heart may be necessary for effective catheter ablation of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, a common cardiac arrythmia.
