Method for Targeting Motor Neurons

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Spinal Muscular Atrophy are disorders of motor neurons for which there is presently no effective treatment. As understanding of the mechanisms of these conditions increases, the possibility for therapy involving delivery of genes to the motor nerve cell bodies is becoming attractive. For example, anti-apoptotic agents, growth factors, free radical scavengers, etc. are thought to show promise for treatment of ALS. However, it is difficult to deliver vectors specifically to the motor neurons. This invention is designed to target motor nerves directly, allowing efficient delivery of vectors carrying therapeutically beneficial genes to the motor neurons. Description (Set) Proposed Use (Set) A product that will allow direct and specific delivery of therapeutically useful genes and agents to motor neurons for the treatment of motor neuron disorders.
