Stop Malaria: How to Kill 10-day Old Mosquitoes |
Malarial mosquitoes quickly evolve to defeat pesticides. Recent research indicates that a solution which _only killed mosquitoes over 10 days old _ would stop malarial transmission without creating evolutionary pressure to adapt.
Malaria affects more people, more gravely, than any other disease. Only female mosquitoes transmit malaria. They breed and lay eggs early in their life, and only later in their life cycle (at an age over 10 days) do they become capable of spreading malaria. A pesticide or other solution which killed the female mosquito late in its life, at approx 10 days old, would affect the mosquito AFTER it breeds, and prevent the transmission of malaria, without creating evolutionary pressure to adapt. Modeling suggests such a solution would both prevent malaria and retain its efficacy. A cost effective solution to this problem could save millions of lives.
