Why does the universe expand?

Post a Problem
Edwin Hubble in studying distant galaxies discovered that the universe is expanding. This is commonly attributed to the big bag. I do not believe in the Big Bang. I read the book the Big Bang Never Happened which confirms my doubts about the Big Bang. Well the question I pose is are there other ways to account for the expansion of the universe in a scientifically valid way? Of course dark energy can be invoked. Are their other explanations? Can dark energy be better understood? Just saying dark energy seems so vague. One idea I have for the expansion of the universe that does not invoke the big bang is that space is being pulled apart by matter and that space fills in the void left when matter pulls space apart. Does this idea have a way of be firmed up, quantified and tested? Does it have merit as an explanation of the so called expansion of the universe? Is this the explanation of dark energy?
