Human trafficking - modern-day slavery - is far more prevalent than most people care to admit. Nobody knows exactly how many slaves there are in the world today, but one of the most commonly cited estimates is Kevin Bales's calculation of 27 million. That's right - more slaves, he argues, than at any point in world history.
Modern-day slavery may manifest itself in factories or mines. It takes place in countless homes, where domestic workers may be overworked, underpaid, beaten, raped - and forbidden to leave to seek help. It pops up in the seedy underground world of the global sex trade, in which women, girls, and sometimes men or boys, often from desperately impoverished backgrounds, are sold for their flesh.
