Reluctance to divulge sexual assault for fear of disbelief |
Many women, men, girls, and boys that are raped, molested, or otherwise sexually abused are afraid to come forward because coming forward makes them vulnerable to double victimization: scrutiny of their own sex lives, accusations of making false allegations, accusations of being themselves to blame.
This is particularly problematic when threats of violence against the youngest victims of sexual abuse are involved. What three-year-old, for example, would be willing to tell that her father had raped her if he'd also threatened to kill her mother if she ever sought help?
