Misunderstanding Disability |

Many individuals view disability as the end of life as they know it. Many view assisted devices, such as walkers and wheelchairs, as impediments to full-fledged participation in humanity, and many gauge "improvement" in another's physical condition as the ability to move beyond assistive devices to totally unaided movement.
The problem with this view is that it devalues the worth of those individuals that DO need to retain assistive mechanisms in order to stay independent throughout life. There is no shame in being in a wheelchair; the shame would lie only in capitulating to the inability to move at all. What can be done to correct public perception?
