Gays & Lesbians in Burundi

Burundi has outlawed same-sex relationships. Being gay or lesbian in the country has long been taboo, with Human Rights Watch reporting that parents have often beaten their homosexual children - and thrown them out of the house - while police have threatened them. Employers were known to fire those that had come "out of the closet." Now that article 567 has been passed, however, gays and lesbians can actually be imprisoned simply for admitting to their natural sexual preferences.

Hostility against homosexuals in the country has grown so intense that some have contemplated suicide.
