Lack of Adequate Protections for National Forests

The Sierra Club has raised concerns that the Tongass National Forest may be vulnerable to road-building. The Tongass is the world's largest remaining temperate rainforest and provides ample space not only for native flora and fauna but also for tourists to enjoy outdoor recreation activities. Its plant life also absorbs significant carbon dioxide, mitigating the blow of climate change.

The 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule provided temporary protection to the forest's roadless areas, but since 2003, these areas have been vulnerable to development should anyone choose to move forward as such.
