When we speak of sex trafficking and/or prostitution, we generally think first of the women and girls providing sex on demand. When we think of solutions, we think of providing women and girls with alternate, healthier means of livelihood. We think, sometimes, of community development that will allow "sending" communities of the global sex trade to offer their inhabitants sustainable incomes so that nobody has incentive to accept sketchy offers of jobs abroad. We think of rescuing victims, of punishing pimps and other sex ring organizers - but how often do we think of fighting demand? How often do we stop to realize that without a steady market for sex, we wouldn't have nearly as many sex trade operations or nearly as many prostitutes? How often do we question the oft-heard claim that men have the right to get their "needs" met by whatever means available?
