Regulating Religion

Post a Problem
Religion is a human commonplace, even if religions themselves differ in practice and belief. Presumably religion once had survival value, after all, it was religion that originally defined who must be killed - criminals, traitors, spies, heretics, blasphemers, unbelievers, infidels, apostates and the rest. Religion also defined who must not be killed, and gave different rank and authority to each person according to their 'value' to society. Religion also defined who may be killed or conquered in order to secure (steal) resources for the king or emperor.

This was fine until someone linked all societies together with boats, planes and the internet. Now we need a new 'common cord'. The Universal declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) was a first step, but deeply religious countries such as the USA are not very enthusiastic, preferring instead their Constitution of Union which allows Americans considerable privileges over foreigners.

Islamic countries similarly have a version of UDHR called The Cairo Declaration of Human Rights in Islam (CDHRI) which gives Muslims extra rights over the rights of believers of other faiths (and especially over atheists, who may be 'justly' executed under Sharia law).

Both the US Constitution and the CDHRI allow 'just war' and judicial killing, and are weak on social security and human equality compared to UDHR declaration of intent.

How might we square the ancient and tribal 'god given rights' of some 'chosen' people with the modern legal right to life and security for everybody, now we humans are reunited as a single family?
