Bad practices hinder the advancement of science

Post a Problem
Until the beginning of the last century science was done by a small group of people who knew each other personally and new each others work well. This offered a quality control against fraud and corruption. Since then, the number of scientists and number of publications increased by orders of magnitudes, science became an industry in which old quality control mechanisms do not work. As a result unethical behavior became common in science. The present organization of scientific life favors the publication of superficial works and proofs of old concepts while it prevents the spread of new ideas. A new system would be needed for scientific publishing and new ways to judge the quality of scientists.
