Comment on:International marriage brokers/mail-order bridesThe least-known fact the "mail-order bride" business is that it doesn't exist. There is no service that allows a man to order a wife/girlfriend/sex slave for home delivery. No government that I am aware of will entertain an application for a spousal or fiancé visa unless the two prospective partners can prove that they have met in person. That pretty well eliminates any third-party scam involving travel expenses and application fees; those have to be handled by the applicants in person. What we are actually talking about is introduction services. Mr. Lonely views a catalog of women who are interested in corresponding with, and ultimately meeting, foreign men, often in the hope of finding Mr. Right and marrying him. They have NOT, however, agreed to accept any proposal, or even to answer mail! Mr. Lonely pays a fee to obtain the mailing and/or email addresses of the women who catch his interest. He can now write to them, but there is no guarantee that he will even receive a letter in return, much less land a mate. It is still up to him to make the pitch. The women are charged nothing; Mr. Lonely is paying the full cost of the service. Such services are no better - and no worse - than the people who use them. There are dishonest people on both sides, including women here in the Philippines who make a very good living by simultaneously scamming multiple lonely men whom they induce to send money. And of course we have all heard the stories of men who are looking, not so much for a mate as for a slave. Let me just point out that the law is not on the side of the male, who is essentially presumed guilty until proven innocent, while the scamstresses ply their vicious trade in plain sight with absolute impunity. It should be clear by now that marriage brokers are not the problem; they have to operate in plain sight and are easily brought to book if they themselves misbehave. Unfortunately, BECAUSE they are visible they are the targets of a loose confederation of femino-fascists, well-meaning but ignorant do-gooders, and of course politicians and bureaucrats who see an opportunity to build yet another empire on the misfortunes of others. A similar thing happened decades ago with international adoptions: legislation intended to protect children against being adopted into abusive households has made it nearly impossible for any but the wealthiest Americans to adopt overseas. As a result, childless couples and orphans are both suffering needlessly. Before the problem of involuntary human traffic can be addressed, the actual nature and source of the problem must be determined, and that means first and foremost stopping the persecution of the innocent. I don't see that happening. Instead, men who had the temerity to find happiness outside their own country are demonized and demeaned. Posted by Marc de Piolenc on February 9, 2010 I see one obvious way that this mail order bride business can be turned into a scam. Charge men for their bride's expenses and transportation fees to come to the United States and then find some reason for the future bride not to come. Of course, the bride can correspond with the man and be described in the most glowing terms. She can be most attractive. I have seen this sort of thing done through email.
