The first step is to see it

We know that there is homelessness, yet somehow, we inure ourselves to it. We pass homeless men and women on the street and avert our gaze. We make up rules -- "you're not supposed to talk to them" -- and we somehow, subconsciously, classify homeless men and women as inhuman enough that we don't stop to wonder whether it's really okay for them to sleep underneath trashbags on the street.

The first step in solving homelessness is to stop ignoring the fact that the men and women we pass on the streets are human too.
