Water pollution caused by manure from factory farms

Medicinal Manure

Part of the problem with water pollution caused by manure is that the manure contains unused pharmaceuticals and antibiotics fed to the livestock. These chemicals enter water systems, contaminate drinking water, and lead to antibiotic resistant bacterial strains.
We propose to collect the manure and extract these unused pharmaceuticals, which can be recycled. Further, manure has inherent antiseptic and antifungal properties that can be harnessed by the pharmaceutical industry. By creating commercial demand for manure, the waste will be collected from farms on a large scale and will thus be prevented from entering water systems and damaging local environments. The introduction of novel, natural pharmaceutical products for consumer consumption additionally benefits this system. Further, the manure demand will create new jobs and boost the economy.
