Small step for a man...but big for the mind
After logical neutral thinking I am convinced that there is only one sustainable long-term solution to the population explosion. It is a solution towards more organized society and is a medical one. This is also the only one that has not yet been tried in any larger scale. Reason for this is, that it requires a massive attitude change first of all within individuals and in the world.
I will rather opt for massive attitude change than world and society destruction that we are facing with the current solutions. All of the current population growth solutions are proving either ineffective and too slow or are too cruel and destructive (such as creating more wars or letting diseases do the work of population control).
This solution would not only solve the population growth problems, but also problems regarding many other things. The reason this solution has not been tried really is that it affects the core of the society's values and thinking. Most people believe that these cannot be changed. But some of us know it can be done and is being done all the time. Look at advertisers. Did you know 10-20 years ago that you "need" Facebook or Brasilian waxes?
The solution is vasectomy of all males, in as early age as medically possible. I already hear loud roar of opposition, because most prefer to stop thinking to that previous sentence and leave it at that.
If you are still with me let me elaborate. This is a solution for this moment and for a few hundred years more. Perhaps by then world population and humans would have become more responsible so that this would not have to be done to everyone.
I am purposefully leaving out the problem of male sexual self-esteem, because I really think that this is the least of our problems that we are facing in this world soon.
Benefits of this vasectomy solution are in the long term (100 years or so):
- children would me made only after consideration, because this would mean either undoing the vasectomy or collecting sperm medically or taking it from the sperm bank
- there would be hardly any unwanted children in the world, which would make a happier society
- women would not chase men just to get someone to produce a child with them unknowingly
- women would not need to choose sex partners based on their ability to provide for a possible child
- men could continue being as promiscuous as they wish, without of fear of becoming supporter of a child
- we would be slowly freed from the idea that each male should continue their own genes. It is much more important to continue the human race and choose those genes that are better!
You may think that this is impossible to do, because men won't do it and men are in power. But considering the pros and cons of the actual solution, any man with any logical thinking ability cannot offer much real arguments against this.
Does every male need a right to produce offspring at whim even if it is this very tendency that obviously destroys our world and quite fast? If the answer is yes, then I see this person self-destructive and not very healthy in thinking.
Vasectomy when it would be a norm, would change society. I strongly believe it would change it for the good. There are so many routine medical procedures that are done in every rich country to adolescents routinely. I really hope this will be a norm in the society some day, because otherwise the world does not have much hope.
Of course this solution would require new laws, it would require total awakening of people to the real problem.
But is is not as difficult as it sounds. Human cultures have always had traditions for youth, even babies are circumcised (which is not transferable btw). Men are fed up with the hormonal problems that the pill produces in women. Most men would probably like to have more sex and women surely will be interested more in sex when the pregnancy is not looming in the background.
How could this begin? It could start with men who have already produced more than one child. Perhaps you would need a certificate of vasectomy to travel to other countries to work. Perhaps this should be in your passport. It would be very difficult to enforce, but much less difficult than the consequenses we face if this is not done.
There will always be enough sperm in this world. Men could store their sperm in banks before vasectomy.
Have you noted that I have not said that women should stop contraception or that only men should be sterilised? You thought that didn't you? This is the difference between an idea and a solution. Idea is food for debate, it needs opposition. Solutions do not need this. This is a solution to ADD to current solutions. It will be probably a hundrend years before women could be actually freed from contraception and all men would be responsible enough to take vasectomy willingly. But in our world, in our time we need all human and ethical solutions we can muster to control world population. Also those ones that challenge our thinking. Otherwise other inhuman solutions are coming to their place.
