What Needs Are Served Through Conflict?

Maybe there should be some effort put into understanding what about the ongoing conflict is working. If some common needs were not being met through conflict, then people would not be addicted to this violence that appears to be never ending. Obviously, there is a shared belief that violence is working to some degree, or people would not engage in it. So, if work were done to identify why conflict appears to be working (or identify the common needs that are being met via conflict), then future discussions could be centered around how the needs can be met at lesser cost, i.e. without the use of violence. When people see peace as a viable means for meeting the needs that are being met through violence, then it becomes a viable solution. Until then, violence appears to be working, because it is meeting some needs, whether we understand them or not. A series of Open Space Technology Meetings (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Space_Technology) would be my recommendation for understanding why conflict appears to be working. Also, Marshall Rosenberg's work in non-violent communication would be applicable to developing future strategies that eliminate the need for violence.
