One solution is to put an end to “Symposia”. These events occur at national meetings of major medical organizations. These symposia are held typically before or after the day’s formal activities. Doctors lecture a room full of healthcare professionals, about the wonders of certain drugs and medical devices. The lecturing doctors are hired by drug and device companies to speak at these events. Dinner or nice snacks are often served.

The exposing of this practice should be enough to put an end to it. The AMA and/or other medical authorities should simply not allow it. There can be no possible way a speaker paid by a drug company can be unbiased, although they claim to be. In fact, those lecturers who didn’t speak completely favorably about the products—sited from a case involving a major drug company—were not hired for future lectures.
