Anaerobic Biodigestion of Community Waste
Dependent on the size of the community, the energy requirements, and the current municipal waste treatment facilities an anaerobic biodigestion facility could produce sufficient energy. Anaerobic biodigestion (with the absence of oxygen), produces a methane based biofuel which can be used to run generators to provide electricity. This technology is employed at swine farms, cattle operations, and is starting to be employed in rural communities in Sweden. Using several different vessels, the biodigestion process can be split into sequences ensuring constant availability of biofuel for the generators. Most often the generators produce more electricity than that required and must be sold back into the grid. The sequence typically requires 205-30 days per batch to fully decompose, the end result is a manure fetilizer very rich in nutrients (which is near odorless due to the absence of methane gasses) This fertilizer along with the greywater from the seperation facility can then be linked to community gardens to produce an aquaponic garden which can produce organic vegetables very quickly due to the high intensity of nutrients in the water and soil.
