Secrecy in scientific research

Progress with Protection

There are valid reasons for secrecy in scientific research. As long as so many scientific developments occur in pursuit of military technology, a great deal of research will be accomplished under the veil of secrecy. However, it may be argued that secretive research denies the public the right to engage in debate as to whether the research is morally or economically acceptable. It seems that, while some secrecy is essential, there should be public openness regarding the nature of the research. One fear shared by many members of the scientific community is that they will not be credited with their contributions if they are too open, too soon. One way in which this fear may be alleviated is to provide an open, web-based forum in which researchers may post updates regarding their projects. This would provide a means by which contributions could be measured, as well as a forum in which ideas could be shared. Such a forum would provide protection for individual scientists, while serving to share information in such a way as to decrease the time spent by other scientists duplicating work that has already been done.
