One of the problems associated with the implementation of desalination technology is the tremendous cost involved. Even though there is ample evidence of long term benefits, demands for short term rewards limit the availability of resources to devote to these projects. What is essential is the generation of capital investment in these technologies. This may be accomplished through the removal of government sponsorship and subsidization of existing, environment-depleting technologies and reinvesting those resources into new, environmental friendly technologies. This will allow developers of the infrastructure needed for these technologies to minimize the amount of initial capital investment while looking toward the long term rewards that will be gained. The reallocation of funds from short-term industries to long-term industries will inevitably cause some economic dislocation. This will be temporary as the emphasis shifts toward environment-friendly solutions to problems associated with fresh water supply to arid regions.
