This problem can be solved by first creating a solid foundation in our children at their early age. Just as they learn to read, write and do other stuff, there should also be a program of behavioral science in schools where they're taught compassion and caring for elderly people. The course should be designed to help them interact with elderly at homes and also at the Senior Citizen communities. They should be assigned to bond with at least one elderly, carefully observe and learn about their problems and find solutions to help them. Getting this kind of first hand experience would help them understand elderly much better than just reading about them. This should be done at least once a week till the end of their school years. This solution can be proposed to schools by organizations like HelpAge. Parents should also be involved to help their children develop this kind of compassion and be reminded that the seeds they plant right now would help their children grow into compassionate human beings. This would ultimately help the parents too when they grow old and need their children to take care of them. The idea is to create awareness among children as well as parents to understand family values where love and caring can be shared between generations. Some people are born compassionate and some people learn it along the way. By making a conscious effort to practice this behavior would make a person's natural instincts stronger to help elderly when faced with these situations in life. Unless schools and senior care agencies step up for this coordinated effort, people would not find any adequate solution to this problem. This problem is a direct result of the nuclear family structure and idea of keeping parents in family is not acceptable to most of the families. People have to be reminded to start looking beyond their own needs & recreate big family structures to help solve this problem.
