Innovative Solution for:

Hazing in colleges across the US

Putting your time in

Hazing is one of the many topics that has come up because of the hypersensitivity to offending someone. It usually comes from the idea that "I put in my time, now they need to put in theirs"

The solution my fraternity is implementing is simply being values focused. A new member is required to have a signature book so that they are provided with an opportunity to get to know each member. This helps underclassmen meet the upperclassmen and create a connection that will reduce the impulse to make them do something they themselves wouldn't want to do or have done to them.

Any punishment is usually values based. Restorative justice is often used. If someone damages something in the house, they repair it themselves and often are required to do something else (sober driving, etc...). These methods work for us because they are not based on the idea that "I am better than you because I've been here longer" but because they are based on the values of our organization. The people who do have those values and are willing to keep them simply ask any member who does not hold them to leave because those values are what the organization is based on.

By building a culture around the values of any organization, you can reduce hazing significantly. It does take effort, especially when the member who is doing things against the values of the organization is critical to the organization in some way, but it is the only way to keep an organization values based and not seniority based.
