Stop Malaria: How to Kill 10-day Old Mosquitoes

Passive Solar trap design

Going after 10 day old mosquitoes is an interesting idea, but, in reality, do we really care how old they are as long as we are eradicating those that are biting humans for a blood meal? For example, might the species just be forced to evolve to feed on the ninth day?

Research has shown that female mosquitoes looking for a blood meal to develop her eggs (10 days or older) are attracted to the COMBINATION of heat, moisture and human scent. A solar powered trap that combines these attractants is being prototyped now and soon tested in Malarial Africa. A brief description of this gizmo can be found at a number of sites.
