Oftentimes when we are prejudiced, we simply do not know what another person's experience is like. We don't know how deserving the "other" may be or how rough he or she may have it. Volunteering outside one's comfort zone -- with a group one knows little about -- offers the opportunity to learn, from the inside, how those from another culture or socioeconomic background live and even to develop empathy and friendship.
