Known Solution for:

Young adult workaholics are pawns of a corporate culture that pushes work-a-holism.

No cost

The solution to this problem lies with the worker. If the worker does not wish to be a work-a-holic, the worker can choose to (a) work for a company that foster's an environment that values the employee in an holistic manner; (b) not give in to the work-a-holic mentality while employed at a company where work-a-holism is a corporate value. This would mean, of course, accepting the potential consequences of such a decision and its attendant impact on one's career. However, the impact on one's personal psyche and family life might outweigh the career consequences; or (c) approach the company with a proposal to align corporate values with its employee needs, pointing out the down side to work-a-holism with respect to health of the employees, potential loss of valuable intellectual capital when an employee burns out, and costs to the company in selecting and retraining another employee.

If enough individuals begin working at this from within corporations, the potential to change not only the corporate culture of an individual corporation, but the corporate culture in general, increases.

Some random thoughts on the subject: (1) I think, we all come with different appetites for different things-- for eating and thinking, for work and for play and even for the number of alcoholic drinks..
