The governments of several countries known for heavy cultivation of drug crops have been aggressively confronting the problem. Columbia, Iran, and Mexico have had success through stepping up their efforts. One crack down in Columbia resulted in the destruction of potentially billions of dollars worth of cocaine bound for sale in the U.S.

Mexico, in cooperation with the US, has seized drugs, eradicated illegal crops and extradited notorious traffickers.

In contrast, Afghan's drug production has increased. According to a US government report, the poppy problem in Afghanistan is due to the fact the Afghan government “doesn't have control of [its] territory.”
