The obvious, somewhat tongue-in-cheek answer to this problem is, simply, to “pull the plug,” as depicted in the case of the HAL-9000 in 2001: A Space Odyssey. However, due to contemporary society’s dependence upon technology, this is a woefully inadequate solution. The alternative is to use existing technology to keep pace with advances in artificial intelligence (AI). Developing technologies allow for the interface of computers with the human brain. This approach, endorsed by Stephen Hawking as a feasible and practical solution to the problem of expanding computer control over human environments and actions, allows for the expansion of human intelligence while maintaining human control over outcomes. The continuing evolution of AI combined with the use of human/computer interfacing provides for the ongoing pursuit of technological advancement, while maintaining human control of the emerging technologies.
