Known Solution for:

Low wage workers in the US working 2-3 jobs, yet scarcely able to pay the bills

Provide Training in Emerging Technologies

The dilemma of working people, who, in spite of their best efforts, remain at or below the poverty level, is well-documented. Often, a significant part of this problem is a lack of training in the skills necessary to progress into higher paying positions. Compounding this problem is the fact that these workers often work long hours at two or more jobs, limiting the time available to pursue new skills. As new technologies emerge, new jobs will emerge as well. These jobs will often be semi-skilled positions supporting the technologically skilled positions. Providing persons currently working at or below poverty level with an opportunity to gain the training necessary to fill these positions would serve two purposes – first, it would allow these individuals to eventually move into higher paying positions, allowing more time for them to devote to family and other meaningful activities. Second, it would provide business with employees who are well-versed in emerging technologies who have the added value of a proven work ethic. Tax incentives provided to corporations providing poverty level workers with on-the-job training in technical skills necessary to perform jobs specific to that particular industry would allow this transition to occur, ultimately having an overall positive economic impact for everyone involved.
