Traffic Jam

A Threefold Approach

The solution for the problem of traffic congestion is three-fold. First, it requires an expansion of access to public transportation. While public transportation is utilized within most large urban areas, people in suburban and rural areas commuting to urban centers significantly contribute to the problem of congestion. Expanding access to these individuals, along with providing incentives to utilize public transportation, will serve to decrease congestion in and around urban areas. A second aspect of the solution, already in use to some extent, is the improvement of communication to drivers regarding potentially congested areas. This may best be accomplished with the use of GPS systems and updateable signage regarding potential delays and alternate routes along heavily traveled roadways. Finally, the use of “smart” traffic monitoring devices may be used to improve traffic flow. Such devices would allow for instantaneous adjustments in controllers like speed limit signs and traffic signals to improve traffic flow.
