Hazing may be defined as an act in which those with power coerce those without power to engage in specific actions. From this perspective, it may be viewed as an act not unlike rape, domestic violence or terrorism. While many schools have policies against hazing, these policies are often applied only in extreme cases. It is often not recognized that hazing is a form of predatory behavior that should be addressed as a criminal act. Forty-four states currently have hazing laws on the books. It is essential that schools cooperate with law enforcement agencies to provide for the treatment of hazing as a criminal act. In addition, students elevated to leadership roles either by peers or by achievement should be required to gain an understanding of the nature of power dynamics within organizational hierarchies and personal relationships.
