One of the problems associated with the use of medications for pain is the potential for addiction or physical dependence. Opioids such as Oxycontin, Vicodin and morphine are effective when used to treat pain. However, there is tremendous abuse and addiction potential associated with these drugs. In order for these drugs to be used effectively while minimizing negative effects such as addiction, it is necessary that those prescribing them be aware of the potential for addiction in the individuals for whom the drugs are being prescribed. This may be accomplished through the use of screening tests prior to potentially addictive medications being prescribed. While these tests are not infallible, they will serve to provide prescribing physicians with some information regarding the individual’s potential for addiction prior to prescribing medications. Increased education regarding addiction among prescribing physicians will enable them to better prescribe safely and effectively.
