There are usually 2 types of drugs doctors prescribe for anxiety – immediate acting and those that need several weeks to take affect. Examples of immediate acting drugs are valium and Xanax.

The drugs which take 2 to 4 weeks to bring relief are the same drugs used for depression: Zoloft, paxil, effexor, prozac and others.
