Youth violence

Anger Management Programs Integrated into School Curriculums

As mentioned in the statement of this problem, youth violence is often a reaction to a perception of powerlessness in the face of greater societal forces. The tendency, when one is faced with powerlessness, is to either become excessively passive or excessively aggressive. When aggression is chosen, it is often misdirected and targeted toward those who are easily victimized. A solution to this problem would be to integrate anger management courses into school curriculum. These courses would be designed in such a way as to allow students to acknowledge and appropriately direct their anger instead of internalizing it until it explodes into violent behavior. It is essential that young people be taught that anger is a legitimate response to their perceptions of injustice. Equally essential is that they recognize that the legitimate expression of their anger will generate change when it is directed at concepts and ideas, not people.
